Tomato harvest

I harvested the last of the tomatoes today. I will now have to start a new lot; the old ones are shaggy and mealy bug-ridden.

The only other plant giving us a regular harvest is the curryleaf, which we use everyday for cooking

I would have been looking forward to a mandarin harvest, and making marmalade from them, if so many of the green fruit hadn't been taken by birds/rats/whatever. Every time I go to the shrub, more green fruit have been taken.

Meanwhile, the heliconia golden torch blooms have matured and developed what looks like seed formations. Are these seeds or something else?

The sun has deserted Bangalore so I am going to wait for a while before I start the next lot of tomatoes, chillies, lettuce and brinjal. Hope I have better results this time.

  1. Your tomatoes look so yummy. I am also growing tomatoes, the flowers have just turned into fruits. The wait seems to be long. Do you have any tips for growing healthy tomatoes?

  2. Aarthi, all I do is use the potting mix as gg recommended -- mix of earth, cocopeat and compost, and then spray with NPK regularly. It helps if the plants get sun, but these tomatoes have come up with very little sun.

  3. Spray NPK - should I spray the maxigrow on the foliage? What do you do when you spray NPK and how often you do it? My plants are kept under direct sunlight, I guess they should bee getting enough in the day time.

  4. Aarthi, maxigrow is for flowering. For vegetables, just use NPK. I prepare a solution of 1 level teaspoon in 1 litre water, and spray it about once in 10 days. It would be a good idea to put your questions onto gg's new forum. You will get replies from the real expert and maybe from other people too. We should get the forum going. Meanwhile, I'd be happy to share anything I know.

  6. thanks for the mosquito bite tip jsb. Im going to keep this in mind. I have had to redo much after my last post as the large sewer rat is quite determined to eat everything. I have only 2 tomato plants left now. :(

  7. Zazu Ta, if you don't have any ideological objections, I recommend putting down some rat poison. We have had to do that in our garden because rats spread disease apart from eating everything in sight.
